(Rockford, Illinois) Manufacturing continues to play a key role in the Stateline economy despite taking some punishment during the recession. Some local manufacturers, such as Header Die and Tool are continuing to grow despite the tough economic times. Header has added 7 new employees over the past six months to raise their total number to 45. President Lucas Derry says, “We are looking forward to an even better 2011. We’ve seen a nice recovery in 2010. We actually grew a little bit over our 2008 numbers.” Derry adds he hope to hire even more new workers during the upcoming year.

CNC Turning

In addition to small quantity steel turning, HDT has a large capacity for CNC lathe turning. We can produce production type quantities of turned product in various material types. This allows the customer to use only one source for all quantity requirements of steel turning.

Besides steel inserts, HDT also utilizes CNC technology to machine carbide inserts allowing us to turn complex angles and radii that others can’t.

HDT also has large diameter CNC turning capacity. We can produce any type of heading die casing or turned product requirements.

EDM

What is EDM?

EDM or Electrical Discharge Machining is a process in which a concentrated spark is generated between an electrode and a work piece. This spark will basically melt or erode most any type of material that the work piece could be made of. The heat from the spark is carefully controlled so that it only affects the surface of the work piece and does not have an effect on material below the surface.

EDM is a very accurate process in which tolerances of +/-.0001” can be held, however +/-.0002” is more common. By holding these tolerances EDM is the ideal choice for machining forms or features in to hardened materials.

There are two common types of EDM, Wire EDM and Ram or Conventional EDM.

Wire EDM

In Wire EDM a metallic wire acts as the electrode and cuts or profiles the work piece. When utilizing wire EDM the cut must always go through the entire work piece. All of Header Die and Tool’s EDM machines have the ability to add taper or draft to the wire allowing for taper in the part or different forms on the top and bottom of the work piece.

Header Die and Tool utilizes Wire EDM for many different applications across many different industries.

Conventional or RAM EDM

Conventional or RAM EDM is used when the cut or feature does not travel through the entire work piece. When utilizing RAM EDM an electrode is made that has the form of the feature that is desired on the work piece. Electrodes are commonly made out of graphite or copper tungsten. Header Die and Tool utilizes advanced high speed machining techniques to manufacture electrodes for our RAM EDM machines, this allows for very complex forms to be applied to the electrode and burned into the work piece. Header Die and Tool’s RAM EDM machines are all CNC controlled and have the ability to “orbit” the electrodes, this feature allows for adding very uniform relief in shaped extruding dies.

Cold Hobbing

HDT has extensive cold hobbing capabilities. We can create customer name, part ID, or grade markings in steel punch inserts by forming the feature instead of machining it. This creates a stronger, longer lasting and better polished finish than conventionally machined or EDM’d product.

Cold hobbing not only produces a better product, but most of the time is more cost effective than it’s EDM’d equivalent.

Steel Heading Inserts/Punches

Header Die & Tool has the capability to turn steel die inserts, punches, and casings with exact consistency of dimensions, from one pc to one hundred pcs.

HDT carries a full line of tool steels, in house. This shortens lead times and deliveries.

We also carry steel nibs in D2, M2, and M42 which are heat-treated and have rough ID’s. This shortens lead times and deliveries.
